It’s true that owning a home can be like having a high-maintenance’ relationship, it needs commitment, time, effort, and money. But at the end of the day, there’s the undeniable pride of homeownership and the reality that you’re taking care of your biggest investment.

With Valentine’s Day just round the corner, here are the top reasons we hear from property owners about why they love (and hate) their home.

1. Memory lane

Whether it is getting your first set of housekeys, the children or grandchildren’s growth chart on the doorframe or reminiscing about hours spent in the garden with family and friends, a home isn’t just a pile of bricks, its where memories are made.

2. The outside connection

Whether it’s a large garden or an unspoiled view from a window, connection the outside is top of homeowners favourite things about their property. Feeling close to the wider natural world make us feel connected and is good for well-being.

3. Location, location, location

Of course, the list wouldn’t be complete without this saying. At Watsons we are proud to operate across the beautiful county of Norfolk, with its stunning coastline, numerous market towns and places. Of course, in today’s world location for mobile signal and fast internet is also a key feature.

4. Charming features

Whether it’s an inglenook fireplace, vintage doorknocker, beautiful wood floor or distinctive tilling, homeowners can and should be proud of the period features in their properties (and of course the effort needed to maintain them for the future).

5. Belonging

Whether you give a casual smile to your neighbour or attend a community board meeting to participate in an issue you care about, when you own a home, it paves the way towards being part of the community.

It’s not me it’s you

On the flip side of Valentines Day we meet many people who have fallen out of love with their property. Here are the top reasons why and some tips for getting back on track.

1. The grass is always greener

When your current property isn’t working for your current lifestyle, something that many of us have found over the last year, it’s difficult to understand why and what you can do about it. Before you lose sight of all the positives that will be hard to replicate elsewhere, try making a list of the pros and cons about your property and maybe you can devise some solutions to your problems.

2. Too much stuff

Expert s often advise on creating ways to hide stuff by way of storage and organisational tips, but this could be a recipe for disaster. It will either be a nightmare to find things or you won’t remember where you put them in the first place. You’ll end up buying more of the same things and before you know it your home will be overloaded. If you have lots of stuff try having a clear our Marie Kondo style.

3. It’s cold outside

This time of year, some homes can feel cold and draughty, which can result in expensive energy bills and an uncomfortable home. Making sure that your radiators aren’t blocked or covered and keeping the doors in your home closed will help stop through-draughts and make your home a little warmer.

If you can’t find anything to love about your current property, perhaps you aren’t a match made in heaven? Make a list of all the things you’re looking for in your next home and we can help you find your perfect property.
