Mental Health at Work Matters
As it’s Mental Health Awareness Week 2024, we thought we’d take a deeper look into mental health at work, and the role of Mental Health First Aiders at Watsons.
In our continued efforts to build a culture of well-being at Watsons, we have recently appointed two new Mental Health First Aiders. The initial response from staff to take on this role was overwhelming, and we only had two positions to fill. This is evidence of just how important mental health and well-being has become following pandemic.
The successful nominees undertook training through the NHS Wellbeing Workshops provided by MHFA (Mental Health First Aid) England. Both appointees are there to offer initial assistance to anyone who requires it, lend a compassionate ear to those who just need someone to listen, and guide individuals toward appropriate support services if needed.
We know that the only effective and sustainable approach to employee well-being at work must involve the whole organisation.
By openly talking about mental health within the workplace, we can help reduce the stigma that still exists and forge a culture of well-being, openness and community.
Last month (April 2024) we held an ‘Understanding Your Mental Health’ seminar at Head Office for anyone keen to join. The two-hour session was carried out by Wellbeing Norfolk and Waveney, (provided by Norfolk and Suffolk NHS FT working with Mind and Relate). Everyone in the building attended that afternoon…
Mental ill-health is the single largest cause of disability in the UK when accounting for direct costs of services, lost productivity at work, and reduced quality of life. Several factors can contribute to poor mental health in the workplace, most of which only lead to further stress if left unaddressed.
Mental Health First Aiders
The purpose of our Mental Health First Aiders is to give employees someone to turn to when they’re struggling with their mental health.
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) ensures confidentiality by safeguarding personal information shared during any support sessions. This practice builds trust, encouraging our employees to seek help without fear of exposure, and fostering a supportive and secure workplace environment.
We asked both of our new appointees why they initially nominated themselves for the important role and what mental health means to them….
Matt Butcher, Business Development Manager
The main reason I put myself forward was to use my own experiences of mental health over the years . I felt that, as a man, this was something that we don’t talk about enough, and I wanted to give back some of the techniques I’ve learnt and the brilliant advice I’ve been given. I love to leave people with a smile, whether that just be a simple smile in passing (this gets me in trouble with the wife sometimes) or to catch up for a chat. I feel that a little bit of kindness would help anyone in need of a little pick-me-up should they need me at any time to talk to.
Shelley Philbrock, Property Services Manager
I nominated myself to become a mental health first aider because I firmly believe in the power of empathy and supporting people’s mental well-being. To me, mental health is much more than just the absence of illness; it’s about understanding and offering compassion towards ourselves and others. In my new role, I plan to offer a non-judgmental ear and offer any guidance I can to those who may be struggling. I hope to be able to create a safe space where individuals feel empowered to seek help and support when needed.
