The government has reissued its official guidance on the possession process for private landlords. The document was originally published last year but was updated on 12 March to take account of the latest extension to the ban on bailiff-enforced evictions and new notice periods for tenants.
Housing secretary Robert Jenrick said: “We have taken unprecedented action to support both commercial and residential tenants throughout the pandemic – with a £280bn economic package to keep businesses running and people in jobs and able to meet their outgoings, such as rent.” A taper of the ban is expected to be implemented beyond the end of May.
The revised guidance for landlords, letting agents and tenants explains the possession action process in the county courts. It notes that, due to coronavirus, in England notice periods given to tenants from 29 August 2020 until 31 May 2021 must be at least 6 months for most grounds. The guidance also sets out the process that must be followed for bailiff enforced evictions.
